This is a living research document analyzing 27 core features (subject to change... it's a lot to think about) of the American economic system—from production and services to capital flows and governance—examining how each operates, who they serve, and where opportunities exist for alternative structures.
Each sector is analyzed through four layers: how it currently works, who benefits and who struggles, how it interacts with other systems, and where organizing opportunities exist. This framework helps builders, organizers, and everyday people understand not just isolated problems, but systemic patterns.

- Entry barrier: Entry-level job elimination removes traditional pathway to middle-income careers
- Debt burden: Student loan delinquency projected to rise from 7.8% to 12.5% by 2027 (Congressional Budget Office)
- Trend: Deteriorating—automation eliminates exactly the jobs this bracket depends on for upward mobility
Average/Middle
Also experienced productivity-pay divergence but had some asset accumulation through homeownership (now increasingly unaffordable) and retirement accounts (if participating).
- Squeeze pattern: Working harder, producing more value, but compensation growth far below productivity increases
- Mid-career vulnerability: As entry-level pipeline collapses, mid-level positions face both automation pressure AND talent shortage
- Asset gap: Hold only 11.7% of equities (Federal Reserve, 2024) despite being substantial portion of workforce
- Trend: Declining toward below-average as automation eliminates middle-skill positions

Primary beneficiaries of productivity-pay divergence, with top 10% (especially top 1% and 0.1%) capturing massive compensation growth from 1979-2020.
- Compensation surge: CEO-to-worker pay ratio grew from 20:1 (1979) to 360:1 (2020) per Economic Policy Institute
- Capital capture: Income increasingly from equity/assets rather than just wages
- Labor's shrinking share: Workers' share of economic output declined while capital's share grew—benefit flows to capital owners
- Trend: Continuing to capture productivity gains through equity ownership and top-tier compensation
